I really don’t know why I’m calling this an “FAQ” page, I haven’t gotten any questions about anyhting yet.Maybe a better term would be “WYLTK” page (as in “Wouldn’t You Like To Know”).
| Why did you do this? | ||||
| Because it seemed like a cool idea. | ||||
| How did you do this? | ||||
| Okay. This is a bit involved, but I’ll try to simplify it as much as possible…This particular “iteration” of my server is an Ubuntu Linuxversion.I’m new to Linux, so this was a bit more difficult than my previous Windows server. | ||||
| First, I installed Apache webserver (a free, enterprise ready web server from Apache Software Foundation. This web server software runs over 90% of the internet servers worldwide.The version I installed via my Ubuntu “package” included PHP5.Next I installed, via the Ubuntu “package manager”, MySQL database server (another free, enterprise ready piece of software from MySQL.
Once these two items were set up and properly configured (this was one of the more difficult parts for a new Linux user like myself), I was able to begin the process of buiding the actual website. Everything else from this point forward involved downloading PHP programs, setting directory rights, and configuring these programs to work properly. If you’re really interested in the minute details, contact me and I’ll explain it in more detail. |

| What kind of software do you have on this this and where did you get it? | ||||
| Let me answer the second half of that question first… | ||||
| Sourceforge is my favorite sight for looking for free programs!Whatever your looking for, you’ll probably find something to meet your needs there. | ||||
| As far as what software I’m using… | ||||
| Photograghs | ||||
| Gallery — Yes. This is a Sourceforge project. | ||||
| Base site | ||||
| Wordpress — One of the few non-sourceforge items I use. Just a note here…Wordpress was originally designed to be a “blogging” software, but (as you can see) it can also run an entire web site. |
||||
| Music (Because of RIAA concerns, you need to be a registered user to access this - let me know if you want to have access) | ||||
| Jinzora — Another Sourceforge find! | ||||
| As I add to my collection, I’ll post more here. | ||||
| How long did all this take? | ||||
| If this had been another Windows box, it would’ve taken me acouple of hours and I’d be up and running.However, let me say again, I’m new to Linux.All told I’d have to guess I spent four to five hours (not including the initial Linux install) working on it at 15 to 30 minute intervals.If I had sat down and just woked on it straight through I think I would have gone BONKERS. I’d work on something, that wouldn’t work right so I’d have to look up how that works under Linux. Then I’d work on the next thing, that wouldn’t work right so I’d have to look up how that works in Linux…ad nuaseam. | ||||
